EWC 2026 Week 1 Champions Recap

Jul 13, 2026.

Some will rise, others will fall. Read on for a breakdown of the first thrilling week of competitive action at the 2026 Esports World Cup.

The first full week of competition crowned champions in Apex Legends, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, and VALORANT. After three thrilling finals, UNLIMIT, Luis Guadalupe "DarkAngel" Castillo Gomez for Natus Vincere, and 100 Thieves lifted the first trophies of EWC 26. With every tournament now awarding Club Championship points, each competing club has officially begun its campaign in the race for this year's title.

Apex Legends Global Series at 26 Esports World Cup
UNLIMIT steal the crown

UNLIMIT delivered a stunning comeback to win the ALGS at EWC 26, claiming the organization's first S-Tier Apex Legends title, $600,000 in prize money, and 1,000 Club Championship points.

The Japanese squad entered the Match Point Finals as underdogs after narrowly qualifying from the group stage, advancing in 14th place thanks to a tiebreaker over Virtus.pro.

After a slow start in the finals, UNLIMIT kept the tournament alive by denying Sentinels the championship in Game 7 with its first win of the day. That set up a dramatic final showdown in Game 10 between UNLIMIT, Wolves Esports, and fellow Japanese squad ZETA DIVISION. UNLIMIT delivered when it mattered most, securing a second match victory to clinch the championship.

"I thought I was in a dream when we won our final match, but I soon realized that our win was very real," said Peace, who was also named Finals MVP for his performance.

FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves at 2026 Esports World Cup
Mexico on top

Natus Vincere's Luis Guadalupe "DarkAngel" Castillo Gomez captured the FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves title at EWC 26, defeating Kenta "mi2ha4" Ichihara 5-1 in the Grand Final to claim $250,000 and 1,000 Club Championship points for his organization.

The Mexican Terry Bogard specialist was the only returning top-eight finisher from last year's event to reach the championship bracket, and he made that experience count. After an early setback that dropped him into the lower bracket during the first group stage, DarkAngel bounced back with a dominant run through the second group stage.

He carried that momentum into the playoffs, edging Reynald "Reynald" Tacsuan 5-4 in a tense quarterfinal before dispatching Japanese veteran Naoki "Nemo" Nemoto in the semifinals to book his place in the Grand Final.

Following his victory, an emotional DarkAngel credited his local fighting game community for helping shape his career, thanking those who supported his journey to becoming the FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves champion at EWC 26.

VALORANT at 2026 Esports World Cup
A drought ended

100 Thieves claimed the VALORANT title at EWC 26, defeating NRG 3-1 in Sunday's Grand Final to complete an undefeated run and secure the organization's first international VALORANT trophy. Along with the win, 100 Thieves earned $600,000 in prize money and 1,000 Club Championship points.

After advancing through the GSL group stage, 100 Thieves survived back-to-back 2-1 playoff victories over MIBR and Nongshim RedForce before facing VALORANT Champions 2025 titleholders NRG in the final. The North American squad capped its run with a convincing 3-1 victory to lift the trophy.

After being named MVP, Matthew "Cryocells" Panganiban admitted he still felt he hadn't played to his own expectations.

"I've had many doubts throughout my career," he said. "But at the end of the day, never stop believing in yourself or the people around you."

2026 Esports World Cup Club Championship

With the first week of competition complete, two clubs sit tied at the top of the EWC 26 Club Championship standings. Following their victories in FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves and VALORANT, Natus Vincere and 100 Thieves each earned 1,000 points to lead the race. They are followed by the week's three runners-up, NRG, Team Vision, and Virtus.pro, who each secured 750 points.

Some readers may notice that ALGS champions UNLIMIT are missing from the standings. While the Japanese squad delivered one of the biggest moments of Week 1, their Apex Legends team is the organization's only representative at EWC 26. To be eligible for the Club Championship, a club must finish in the top eight in at least two competitions, meaning UNLIMIT cannot earn Club Championship points this year.

Team Vitality, meanwhile, secured an important milestone without lifting a trophy. With both its VALORANT and FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves teams finishing in fifth place, the organization became the first club to meet the two top-eight finish requirement for Club Championship eligibility.
