Congratulations Crazy Racoons, the first ever Esports World Cup: Overwatch 2 champions after a wild Week 4 weekend.

Crazy Racoons' world-class dive comps allowed them to dominate Championship Sunday.

The Japanese org, sporting an all-Korean roster, dropped only two maps in their undefeated run to the top of the Overwatch world. Here’s what went down at EWC OW2 2024.

The Road To The Grand Finals

Championship Sunday for Esports World Cup: Overwatch 2 kicked off with a rivalry match between OWCS Korea’s top two teams: Crazy Racoons and Team Falcons.

These two have history. Crazy Raccoons, led by former OWL superstars Lip and Shu, got the best of Team Falcons to win the Overwatch Champions Series 2024 Major in Dallas.

In the semifinal match of EWC OW2, Crazy Raccoons reasserted that dominance, putting Team Falcons down in a convincing 4-1 result. Team Falcons did make them bleed by picking up one map, but crucial mistakes like a game-losing C9 on Eichenwald cost the Falcons any hope of winning the series.

On the other side of the bracket, the Korean roster of Zeta Division faced off against the American/Korean mixed roster of Toronto Ultra.

That series went the distance, ending on the newest Push map Runasapi. The final map was a clash of styles between Zeta Division’s Dive comp featuring Bernar’s D.VA and Ultra’s poke comp, headlined by Someone’s Sigma.

In the end, spearheaded by Sugarfree’s ridiculous Tracer heroics, Ultra secured their place in the Grand Finals.

The Grand Finals: Crazy Racoons VS Toronto Ultra

The Grand Finals pitted Crazy Racoon, the top-rated team in the world, against the new kids on the block Toronto Ultra featuring NA’s best player, Sugarfree.

Unfortunately for Ultra, Crazy Racoon showed nothing but pure dominance during the Grand Finals, using their world-class dive compositions to control the map and stomp Ultra in team fights.

It was a 4-1 affair. Crazy Racoon outclassed Ultra’s roster on every level, especially the backline. CH0R0NG and Shu would simply not let their teammates die.

Ultra did put up a fight though. On map 4, sugarfree helped them get an early lead with his unexpected Sombra pick. And even though Crazy Racoons took the lead back, Ultra was able to clutch an unlikely cross-map overtime comeback to stay in the series.

But that’s all Ultra would get, as Crazy Racoons wrapped up their undefeated EWC OW2 run, becoming the first team to place their key in the EWC OW2 World Cup Trophy.

EWC OW2 MVP and earnings

Crazy Raccoon walks away with the $400,000 top prize as well as the inaugural EWC OW2 trophy. Toronto Ultra earned $160,000 for finishing second.

The event MVP was Crazy Racoon’s cracked flex support Shu. He was crucial to the entire tournament run, and especially impactful during the Grand Finals. He takes home the MVP title and a $50,000 prize for his efforts. In the post-match interview, Shu promised to treat his team to a nice meal with his winnings.

What’s next for Overwatch 2?

All of the teams from the EWC OW2 competition will set their sights on competing at the OWCS 2024 Finals in Stockholm taking place November 22-24.

Teams won’t wait long to get back into the action either. OWCS action, including Korea Stage 2, EMEA Stage 3, and North America Stage 3, all kick off August 9th.
