After eight weeks of competition — across a dozen genres of games and with millions of dollars won by teams and clubs from around the world — the first ever esports World Cup has come to a close.
This past week, Team Falcons won the Club Championship — with two trophies and more than double the points of the next closest team — and championships concluded in Rocket League, PUBG Battlegrounds, ESL R1, and Tekken.
Let’s take a look back at four top moments from the Esports World Cup’s final week.
Team BDS made an epic run at the Esports World Cup, dominating the hometown favorites from Team Falcons in a 4-2 Grand Final series to win the EWC: Rocket League title. In Map 6, it was Championship point for Team BDS, and in the first 15 seconds of Overtime Monkey Moon scored a tremendous goal to take the Championship in style
Watch Monkey Moon “call the game by himself” with a well-timed, well-placed shot over top of three defenders to claim the series. This shot was supreme, and exemplified everything that brought Team BDS to the top at the Esports World Cup: Their incredible coordination, precise technical execution, and flawless timing.
If you want a little bonus moment from Team BDS, exExoTiiK hit a clip of his own earlier in the series with a flawless shot from one of the hardest angles to score from. These boys were on it Sunday.
Soniqs won three rounds of EWC: PUBG: Battlegrounds, and took home a combined 60 kills to come away with the EWC: PUBG: Battlegrounds crown. They also produced one of the most exciting highlights of the entire tournament in Round 8.
Looking to get back-to-back wins in Round 7 and 8, Soniqs were in a final circle situation against Petrichor Road. Both teams had three players alive, and PeRo had the high-ground, which isn’t great if you are Soniqs.
Despite the disadvantage of the situation, TGLTN met the moment with brilliant mechanics, stringing together two quick uphill kills and then playing the standoff situation with the remaining player to perfection. Soniqs won the game, and ultimately the series.
Championship Sunday for EWC: ESL R1 was a spectacle to behold for sim racing fans all around the world. Team Redline donned the crown, after dominating every aspect of the EWC: ESL R1 competition. You can get a taste of what that domination looked like in this magnificent moment from Race 2 on Sunday.
It was Lap 1/7 in Race 2, and Team Redline drivers Job and Bennet trailed Mouz Esports Benecke by only a few tenths of a second. Job picked up on Benecke’s slipstream and, with Bennet following close behind, started his pass. As the teammates picked up speed, Bennet began bump-drafting his teammate, launching Job into the lead of the race with Bennet right behind.
Teamwork really does make the dream work.
ULSAN upset the hometown hero, Team Falcon’s ATIF, to win the Grand Finals of EWC: Tekken on Sunday in flawless 5-0 fashion. And while his emotional victory moment was unforgettable, there was one even more hype moment from the tournament that is even more unforgettable — Yagami pulling off the unlikely reverse-sweep comeback to survive Quarterfinals.
Using the character Zafina, Chanel stood on business in his Quarterfinal match against Yagami, besting his Reina and Feng picks in a four game streak. With five match points ahead of Chanel, victory seemed inevitable. But against all odds, Yagami managed to win five games in a row, completing the only reverse sweep of the tournament.
Check out this incredible hype final round, as Yagami pulls off the match winning combo with barely any health to spare. What a play!
