The Portuguese star only qualified last week in the Last Chance Qualifier but clawed his way onwards to the trophy.

João "jafonso" Vasconcelos is the EA FC 2024 champion. The Portuguese phenom brought glory to Luna Galaxy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with a 6-2 victory in the Grand Finals of Esports World Cup: EA FC 2024 over Tuzzy E-Sports’ Gabriel "Young" Freitas 6-2.

jafonso’s road to victory

In Group A of Esports World Cup: EA FC 2024, jafonso showed little difficulty in securing the 1st seed with a 6-1 record. This allowed him to skip the Resurrection Stage and go straight to the Playoffs, where he continued to cruise with a 6-2 victory over Team Gullit’s Manuel "ManuBachoore" Bachoore in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals was jafonso’s true test – Al-Ula FC’s Paulo "PHzin" Chaves took jafonso to overtime before the eventual champion was able to edge out a victory, 7-6. That momentum was more than enough for jafonso to hit the ground running against his second Brazilian opponent in a row in the grand finals. Young had finished 2nd in Group A just under jafonso, and he would have to settle for finishing just under jafonso yet again in the grand finals.

At the beginning of this week, jafonso wasn’t even guaranteed a spot in EWC: EA FC 2024 – the 20-year old had to qualify via the EWC 2024: Last Chance Qualifier that took place just before the main event. All in all, jafonso played 21 matches on his road to lifting the trophy.

“I worked so much for this,” jafonso said through tears in a post-game interview on stage, “I knew I could be a world champion, and today was that day.”

Fighting through emotion, jafonso also gave a special thank you to his coach, Armando Vale.

With his 6-2 win over Young, jafonso laid claim to $300,000 of the Esports World Cup: EA FC 2024 $1,000,000 prize pool.

His victory also earned his squad, Luna Galaxy, 1,000 Club Championship Points – good enough for a 9-way tie for 7th place alongside Alliance, Alpha7 Esports, Selangor Red Giants, Crazy Racooon, KPL Dream Team, Omega Esports, XSET, and Team BDS.
