Xiao Hai wins EWC: Street Fighter 6 at 35-years-old
A 35-year-old Chinese FGC veteran, Xiao Hai is considered by many to be the GOAT of King of Fighters and one of the fighting game community's most notable icons. But in spite of that, Xiao Hai has been on a path to prove himself as an older competitor, surrounded by up and coming talent a decade his junior.
And at EWC: Street Fighter 6 he proved himself. On Sunday, Xiao Hai became the inaugural EWC: SF6 champion by landing this effortless final combo in a 5-2 stomp against one of the worlds most successful Street Fighter players, Kawano. It was an inspirational moment, as a legend of FGC adds another title to his already golden legacy.
In the EWC Ft. Fortnite Grand Finals — while the series was tied 2-2 between XSET and Exceed — XSET Ritual turned into a one man army on Hardpoint. Flexing his sniper rifle mastery, he lit up the kill feed in the second rotation of Map 5, including anchoring the pivotal Tunnel hardpoint with a huge 3k to take the lead.
By the end of the map, he dropped over 20 kills to earn his team Match Point. That became the turning point in the series, as XSET went on to secure the very next map in dominant fashion to place their key in the inaugural EWC Ft. Fortnite Trophy.
While the final victory moment from Xiao Hai’s Street Fighter 6 championship likely meant the most to him, another moment from his run to the top stands out to the FGC.
In the EWC: SF6 semifinal match, Xiao Hai had just one health and a dream. He was going to need to be perfect to survive — and he was. He executed a flawless defense before dropping one of the most insane combos of the tournament. The combo defeated Gachkun and sent Xiao Hai to the Grand Finals, all on the back of what may go down as one of the greatest sequences in Street Fighter history.
Wolves Esports had a tremendous outing at the EWC TFT, winning the tournament against T1 while only dropping a single map throughout the entire event.
It was a dominant performance, capped off with this electric battle in which Team Wolves broke through T1’s front line and brought them crumbling to the ground. This fight was the killing blow, ending T1’s hope of becoming the first-ever EWC TFT champions. That title belongs to the Wolves!
